Special Events

June 26th event – The United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, and CCVT 30th anniversary celebration, took place at Innis College Town Hall, University of Toronto on Tuesday, June 26th, 2007.  This year’s theme was “Exile of Trauma and Challenges to the Settlement”.   The event was funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.  There were two parts for this event – one day panel discussions and evening of cultural performances.  The event intended to facilitate interaction among the Human Rights community, survivors of torture, CIC funded workers (ISAP, SWIS, SEPT, HOST, LINC), Universities and Colleges, and other community agencies serving refugees. As a result, we had over 250 participants from all across Ontario and from over 40 organizations, who came with a shared commitment in advocating for refugees and immigrants’ rights.

Community Forum

Morning Session

The role of volunteer involvement in creating inclusive and welcoming communities is immense. As Canada welcomes hundreds and hundreds of new Canadians into its communities every day, the role of volunteers becomes more special in many ways. Volunteers not only provide support to those who are new to our country but also they become agents of change in creating
a welcoming environment for new Canadians to integrate more successfully into Canadian social fabric.
Panelists from diverse backgrounds shared their insights on the importance of volunteering and examples of successful volunteering and community development programs. The panelists emphasized the aspect of reciprocity in volunteering, e.g. a successful volunteer program generates enormous advantages for both parties (volunteers and people who receive service from volunteers) as well as for the community.

Afternoon Session

The members of the panel shed light on the social and psychological challenges facing refugees, particularly child and youth refugees. Language barriers, discrimination, loss of identity, academic challenges, and culture shock can make integration in the new country very difficult for newcomers. How can we help alleviate some of these obstacles? How can we assist them to rebuild their self esteem and promote their future success? These and other questions were addressed in a thoughtful, meaningful context, which broadened our horizons and helped us look into a new future. The fruitful dialogue that stemmed from this panel discussion and the rich sharing of knowledge and ideas contribute to the re-empowerment of youth and child survivors, shaping a new vision for the future of young refugees in Canada.

Community Forum was concluded by powerful performance of Canadian Native Centre of Toronto, one of Canada 's
largest and oldest Friendship Centres. The audience was visibly taken by their powerful performance and engaging
storytelling. The performance was particularly of an interest to CCVT clients, who wish to foster a greater understanding of Aboriginal People and their distinct culture.
